The VR negotiations committee approves a strike vote

03mar2024

At its meeting last night, VR’s negotiations committee agreed to hold a vote on strike action among VR’s members who work in Icelandair’s passenger and baggage services at Keflavík Airport. This is Icelandair staff who handle, among other things, check-in, bag reception, boarding and lost luggage services for Icelandair and other airlines. The staff works according to Icelandair’s special wage agreement, which is subject to changes in accordance with the main wage agreement of VR and SA, and therefore falls under ongoing wage negotiations.

VR, on behalf of the workers, has for a long time tried to push for wage changes for this group as well as changes in their work arrangement, which is unlike anything else in the Icelandic labor market. About half of the approximately 150 people who work at Icelandair’s passenger services are required to reduce their employment rate during the winter months from 100% to 76% and do not enjoy the right to continuous working hours. People in jobs related to aviation in Keflavík usually work on 12-hour shifts. Icelandair’s passenger and baggage services workers, however, come to work during winter between 5 and 9 in the morning, are then sent home and required to come back to work between 1 and 5 pm. This is an unacceptable working arrangement and needs to be corrected.

The special wage agreement with Icelandair is one of the issues that are still unresolved in the current wage negotiations between VR and SA. Other issues include wages issues, prerequisite clauses and various rights issues. It is the hope of the VR negotiation committee that an agreement will be reached on these issues and that there will be no need for strike action. However, the progress of the negotiations has led the negotiation committee to deem it necessary to allow VR members who work in Icelandair’s passenger and baggage services at Keflavík Airport to express their democratic will on strike action.

The vote on the strike will be formally announced tomorrow, Thursday, and the vote will begin Monday at 9.00 and last for three days. If strike action is approved, strikes will begin on Friday 22 March.
